Well, as for me Scorched3d works perfectly when running under gnome 2.16.* and 2.6.18 kernel with enabling all sound effects (birds, and so on). Might not be your problem, but it's worth a shot. Is the sound choppy for you by any chance? For me all my games that use SDL stutter like crazy, and scorched earth started crashing when I tried playing with the sound on.
